S17B6 The Music of the Sixties Part Two: Into the Garden

This is the second in a two-part series, The Music of the Sixties which covers the music trends and styles of that decade and how they wove into the social trends of that era. Part Two will begin with the transitional year of 1966 which saw a revolutionary change in the purpose of record making: individual creativity eclipsed the popular motive for recording and performing. Musical examples such as West Coast Psychedelia, Bob Dylan, The Beatles and Rolling Stones will be explored and the session will also address the social and political climate that influenced the era. Attendance in part one is not a pre-requesite to this class.

Instructor: Bob Driver has been a blues performer/instructor for the past forty years and a full time guitar instructor/performer since 2002. His music education began in the 1970's when he played informally with traditional bluesmen such as John Jackson, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and Buddy Moss in their homes or at festivals. In the decade between 1980 and 1990 he opened for, or performed with, nationally known artists such as Jorma Kaukonen, Roy Bookbinder, Duck Baker, John Hartford, Reverend Billy Wirtz, Catfish Hodge and many others. In the summers of 2006 and 2007, Bob was an artist in residence at Camp Horizons in Keezletown, Virginia overseeing their guitar program. He has taught three classes for James Madison's Lifelong Learning program on the Swing Era, the history of the blues and the roots music that culminated in Rock and Roll.
