S17B9 Faith and Reason: Either/Or or Both/And

In our Western culture, can one maintain a commitment to Christian tradition in light of modern scientific perspectives? In the modern era the disciplines of theology and philosophy have parted ways, theology claiming allegiance to historical literature and traditions, whereas philosophy accepts only reason as a criterion and is impressed by empirical evidence. What might be the position of a contemporary person over faith and reason in relation to the supernatural, miracles, questions of authority, allegiance to biblical perspectives, or ethical choices? The course assumes participants who will provide rich discussion and important perspectives in addition to the limited lectures.

Instructor: Steve Watson taught at Bridgewater College over forty years in the Philosophy and Religion department. These two areas of philosophy and religion were prominent in his undergraduate and graduate studies. As a college professor his key interests were logic, philosophy of science, language analysis, and his course on the New Testament. His methodology always includes a great deal of discussion and participation.
