S18B14 A Songbag Folk Music Primer: Chapter 5-9

The class will focus on several types of American traditional music in individual sessions. Cowboy songs, train songs, sea songs and chanteys, old-time string band music, and the American Folk Revival will be featured topics. Unlike the previous Folk Music Primer class, these sessions will feature a team of instructors: Mel Lee, Oakley Pearson, Bill Harouff, Jim Gaskins and Phyllis Gaskins. The instructors will individually and collectively conduct "informances" and will provide opportunities for group participation.

Instructor: Mel Lee, Oakley Pearson and Bill Harouff have played and sung together informally for over thirty years. All have eclectic tastes in traditional and contemporary folk music, but also have individual areas of special interest. Mel hosted folk music programs on public radio for over 20 years and played both solo and in several bands, and has led chantey sings at the Oak Grove music festival for over ten years. Oakley began learning cowboy songs at his grandfather's knee, and also loves the blues, jazz and Bob Dylan songs. Oakley lived in several cities that were centers of the folk music revival where he met or heard live many of the figures of the revival. Bill began playing in college with a Kingston Trio style group and has played in a Bluegrass band, performed in stage musicals, toured with the folk group Windfall, and recorded with his wife Lorain.
Jim and Phyllis Gaskins have been lynch-pins in the local old-time music scene for many years, playing fiddle, banjo, Appalachian dulcimer, and guitar. They currently perform with the Highlanders String Band, teach individual lessons, and lead old-time and Irish music sessions in Bridgewater. Phyllis has been recognized by the Virginia Foklife Society for the her preservation of the Galax style of dulcimer playing.
