JMU Past, Present, and Future

This course explores how and why James Madison University evolved over the last 30 years into what it is now, the many ways it impacts the local community, and how it could change over the next 10 years. Using four research studies completed in 2017-18, we will examine the ways in which JMU changed across four dimensions: student demographics, faculty and staff, facilities and finances, and the undergraduate experience. We will also examine how these changes influenced the local community economically and culturally, as well as tuition and fees, government appropriations, University spending patterns, and institutional values and opinions.

Instructor: Frank Doherty served as Director of Institutional Research at James Madison University for more than 25 years. His office was responsible for collecting, reporting, and studying data about students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the university budget.
