This course will briefly examine the multi-dimensional German contexts before and during Nazism. Having established something of the contexts within which Bonhoeffer lived and taught, we will explore some of his key theological writings. This will include his most popular works, Discipleship and Life Together. We will also, briefly, examine some of his other academic writings that influenced and/or reflect his deepest theological commitments, as well as his writings that addressed the issues of war and anti-Semitism. We will delve into some of his most provocative writings that come from his hand during his most trying time—Letters and Papers from Prison. Bonhoeffer’s courageous, almost unique witness in the midst of the Third Reich is what truly sets him apart. Thus, elements of his life will be woven throughout this course. Finally, we will pose the question: what might we learn from Bonhoeffer for us in our time? Student’s may wish to purchase Nation’s book, Discipleship in a World Full of Nazis: Recovering the True Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. It is also recommended that you watch the documentary film, Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Memories and Perspectives (Amazon Prime).
