Participants are directed to purchase the following prior to the first-class session:
1. US 13/9.0 knitting needles, either circular with at least a 24-inch cord OR straight needles
2. Yarn, bulky weight (5 or 6) in a wool or synthetic blend such as Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in the color of your choice. Cotton yarn is not recommended for this class.
In this course, students will learn the basics of knitting, including how to cast on, do the knit and purl stitches, and bind off as we make a scarf. Students will also leave this course with an understanding of different fibers and how to appropriately match their yarn and needles to get the best outcome. Other topics we will discuss include gauge, swatching, and project planning.
Amy Strunk has been immersed in the fiber arts since she learned to crochet and knit (poorly) at age 7. She spent the next few decades playing around with different projects, but in 2018, she rediscovered her love of all things fiber in a more serious way and founded Rocktown Yarn, Harrisonburg's local yarn store, in 2020. She has been teaching knitting and crochet to all ages since 2018 and is excited to share her passion for fiber crafts with the Shenandoah Valley. When she isn't making shawls and socks, she also lectures for JMU's College of Business - Marketing Department at JMU.
