“A Republic, if you can keep it.” This was
Benjamin Franklin’s response to the question,
‘Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or
a monarchy?’ Our country has survived a Civil
War, terrorist attacks, World Wars, a Great
Depression, McCarthyism, disputed elections
and most recently an insurrection. In this
class, we will trace the American experience in
regard to threats to our republic. We will start
from the Constitutional Convention of 1787
and progress to the most major realignment
of government since that 100-day debate
that took place in Philadelphia. First, we will
consider what form of government we have
in the United States. Are we a democracy, a
republic or a constitutional republic? What were
the founder’s intentions? When the Founders
decided on the Constitution, what were their
fears? What did they compromise on? What (if
anything) would they have done differently if
they had the perspective of these post 2024
Presidential Election months? The focus of the
class will be to examine the past challenges
to our Constitutional Republic and consider
the question: Are we currently in the midst of
another Constitutional Crisis?
